Are Wingless Sprint Cars less expensive to run than Winged Sprints?
On the west coast we have Spec-Sprints that only allow 2 barrel carbs and 4 barrel intake. We also have Wingless Pavement/Asphalt Sprints (360 2 barrel).
Yes, wingless sprint cars cost less to run than racing with a wing. The two largest cost factors in operating any race car are tire and engine costs. At racing speeds, the 25 sq. ft. wing area on a sprint car generates well in excess of 700 lbs. of down force. The down force creates exponentially more load on the engine, increasing the stress on the crank shaft, bottom end bearings, as well as the connecting rods. Also, because of the increased grip, the engine operates in a higher rpm range, on average. Tire costs are also increased due to the loads generated by the wing.
I like both winged and non-wing sprint car action; but facts are facts.
